The Inn at Hastings Park is a beautifully appointed B&B in Lexington and part of the Relais & Châteaux luxury B&B international network. I knew of the unique environment created by their Federalist Modern styling; I had been lucky enough to have a little getaway there in exchange for food photography I had done for the restaurant, Artistry on the Green.
The inn’s Marketing Director had told me that while they had great photographs that showcase the design of each room, they didn’t have people on their website. As with so much in life, it’s the people who make up the experience. She wanted to bring a warm human element to the website.
At first she mentioned trying to coordinate a shoot with models acting as guests at the inn trying to emulate everyday moments to photograph. But as I listened I realized that it’s the Inn’s staff, from servers to the managers, who make a guest’s experience so special. I suggested photographing the real staff from a guest’s point of view…
That’s just what we did! We set up the shoot for a quiet morning at the Inn and I, with my camera, tried to take the place of a guest. Someone held the door open as I arrived, someone poured my fresh coffee with a smile, and I even passed housekeeping putting final touches on a room. At first such a shoot can feel awkward for people—”pretending” to be themselves for a shoot. But we took our time and kept the shoot low-key so each person could feel comfortable, allowing their personality to shine.
